At Maui Housing Hui, we believe that everyone deserves a safe, stable, and affordable place to call home. We are a grassroots, community-driven organization made up of Maui residents helping fellow Maui residents navigate the housing crisis with knowledge, advocacy, and support.

The Maui Housing Hui began as a group of renters in late 2022 under a different name. We volunteered our time to learn about renters rights and spread what we have learned to all the renters of Maui. We began identifying weaknesses in renter protections and seeking feedback from renters on what protections they hoped to see from leadership.

After the devastating August 8, 2023 wildfires, it became clear that our work needed to expand beyond strictly renters rights. Thousands of families lost their homes overnight, and the need for strong housing advocacy grew greater than ever. Maui Housing Hui has used the value of equity as a guiding principle in the work that we do. The housing crisis in Maui is all too real for our community and Maui Housing Hui commits our efforts to listening to the community needs and fighting for a more level playing field for anyone that is vulnerable in their housing.

This is the Maui Housing Hui—a collective dedicated to ensuring that our entire community has access to the resources, information, and protections they need to secure housing, especially those who need the most help.

What We Do

🔹 Outreach – We know life is busy, and finding help can feel overwhelming. That’s why we bring resources directly to the community, meeting people where they are—through events, workshops, and partnerships with other local organizations. Our goal is to make it easier for Maui residents to get the help they need, when they need it.

🔹 Education – Knowledge is power. We empower residents by breaking down complex housing laws, explaining tenant rights, and making sure you have the information needed to advocate for yourself. Whether it’s through social media, community meetings, or one-on-one support, we share real-time updates on Maui’s housing crisis and what you can do to protect yourself.

🔹 Research – Our community’s experiences matter. We collect and analyze local housing data to bring your voices directly to leadership—ensuring that decisions about Maui’s housing future are based on real needs, not assumptions. It is central to our research methods to lift up and center community voices. We strive for our research to drive policy change and keeps us focused on solutions that truly serve our community.

🔹 Advocacy – The housing crisis won’t fix itself—we need policies that truly support Maui’s residents. We work to amplify community voices in government decisions, push for stronger renter protections, and demand solutions that keep local families housed. Whether it’s advocating for rental assistance, disaster recovery funding, or fair housing policies, we are committed to making sure that housing on Maui is fair, accessible, and secure for all.

We also recognize that stable housing benefits everyone—renters and landlords. When renters have the support they need, landlords experience fewer vacancies, more consistent rental income, and stronger relationships with their tenants. A stable rental market leads to a stronger, more connected Maui, where both renters and property owners can thrive. In our efforts to create stability, there is a role for everyone to keep Maui residents housed.
