Maui witnessed a powerful display of unity and determination as tenants, advocacy groups, and allies came together for a crucial cause. On Monday, October 23, 2023, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Queen Kaʻahumanu Mall in Kahului, HI, served as the backdrop for a Tenant’s Rights Rally that sought to secure housing stability for all.

What Was the Rally All About?
Tenants across Maui, bolstered by organizations like Lāhainā Strong, Maui Rapid Response, Roots Reborn, and other Tenants’ Rights advocates and allies, raised their voices in support of extending the Maui eviction moratorium and rent freeze. The rally’s message was clear and compelling: “until supply meets demand, the moratorium should stand.”
As we all knew, the wildfires brought unprecedented challenges, particularly in the realm of housing. For many families, the moratorium and rent freeze had been a lifeline, preventing homelessness during times of economic uncertainty. However, with the need for housing still far from met, the rallying cry for continued protection was strong.

When and Where?
People joined on Monday, October 23, 2023, at Queen Kaʻahumanu Center. The rally took place on the sidewalk facing Kaʻahumanu Avenue by Kane Street, located at 275 W Kaʻahumanu Avenue, Kahului, HI 96732.
Why Your Presence Mattered
Attendance at the rally made a real difference. It was a chance to stand up for tenant rights and housing stability in Maui. By showing their support, people were a part of positive change, ensuring that their fellow community members had a safe and secure place to call home.
Whether they were tenants, homeowners, or simply individuals who cared about housing justice, their presence and solidarity were invaluable.
For those who couldn’t attend the rally, they considered spreading the word through social media and reaching out to local representatives to express their support for tenant rights.
The Tenant’s Rights Rally was more than an event; it was a collective effort to create a fair and just community. People stood together for housing justice in Maui!
